Unauthorised Structures At Jagan Reddy's Residence In Hyderabad Demolished

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Saturday demolished certain structures adjacent to the Lotus Pond residence of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy here.

According to a senior official of GHMC, the civic authorities removed the structures abutting the compound wall to carry out tiling work on the pavement in front of Jagan's residence.

The structures were being used by security personnel, he said.

An earthmover was used to remove the structures.

'Impossibly Unaffordable': These 10 Cities Top The List of High-Cost Living

Finding an affordable home is becoming increasingly difficult, not just in 1 or 2 big cities, but around the world. A new report reveals the cities where this struggle is most prominent, including the top five least affordable metropolitan areas in the United States.

The annual Demographic International Housing Affordability report has been tracking housing costs for two decades. This year's edition identifies the top 10 most expensive housing markets globally, alongside the most affordable ones.

Ranking the Unaffordability:

The rankings are based on data collected in the third quarter of 2023 from 94 major markets across eight countries: Australia, Canada, China, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The report utilizes a "median multiple" to measure affordability. This ratio divides the median house price by the median household income.

The markets are then categorized into five affordability brackets based on their median multiple:

1. Affordable (3.0 and under)
2. Moderately Unaffordable (3.1 to 4.0)
3. Seriously Unaffordable (4.1 to 5.0)
4. Severely Unaffordable (5.1 to 8.9)
5. Impossibly Unaffordable (9.0 and over)

According to the report, Hong Kong holds the dubious distinction of being the least affordable housing market in the English-speaking world.

Why So Unaffordable?

The report cites several factors contributing to the affordability crisis. The rise of remote work during the pandemic fueled a surge in demand for housing, particularly in suburban and even more remote areas. This demand surge pushed house prices significantly higher as people sought more space, both within the house and in surrounding yards or gardens.

The report also blames "urban containment policies" aimed at limiting sprawl and increasing density in desirable areas. While these policies are intended with good intentions, the report argues that they severely restrict the available land for housing development. In already constrained markets, higher land values translate directly into dramatically higher house prices.

Watch: MPs Fight Each Other In Italy Parliament Ahead Of G7 Summit

A brawl in the Italian parliament over the far-right government's plans to grant regions more autonomy has triggered an uproar, with some comparing the punch-up to the days of fascism.

The fight broke out Wednesday evening after Five Star Movement (MS5) deputy Leonardo Donno tried to tie an Italian flag around the neck of regional affairs minister Roberto Calderoli of the pro-autonomy Northern League.

Donno's stunt was intended to denounce plans to grant more autonomy from Rome to those regions that wanted it. Critics argue that it undermines Italy's unity.

In response, Calderoli's fellow League deputies left their benches en masse to mob Donno, and the debate descended into a free-for-all involving some 20 men.

Donno, injured in the scuffles, had to be evacuated in a wheelchair before being sent to hospital.

The brawl provoked a torrent of reactions from political leaders and made the front pages of the Italian newspapers. Many criticised the example set by the elected representatives.

"The squadrist right is fighting in parliament," the newspaper La Repubblica lamented, using a term used to describe the post-World War I paramilitary forces that went on to become fascist leader Benito Mussolini's infamous Blackshirts.

Italy's leading daily Corriere della Sera said the house had turned into a "boxing ring".

Lawmakers from the League and the Brothers of Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's party, accused Donno of provoking the incident and even faking his injuries.

The M5S denounced a "serious and shameful attack" and called for immediate measures.

"Violence comes from the benches of the Meloni majority... Shame," its leader, Giuseppe Conte, wrote on social media network X.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani acknowledged that lawmakers should hold themselves to a higher standard, telling Sky TG24 that politicians "have to set a completely different example.

"The chamber is not a boxing ring... it's not fisticuffs that solve political problems."

Critics say that the autonomy proposal will result in public services being cut back in the poorest regions.

The scenes in parliament are by no means unprecedented.

In 2021, deputies from the Brothers of Italy -- which has post-fascist roots -- mobbed the centre of chamber to interrupt a debate on the Covid-19 health pass.

Video: Weeks After Porsche Horror, Car Flings Woman Into Air Near Pune

A woman was injured after being hit by a speeding Wagon-R car in Pimpri Chinchwad city of Maharashtra. The video of the accident shows her being tossed into air and fly at least 10 feet to land hard on the road. The driver has been taken into custody and the car has been seized, the police said.

The incident is said to have taken place on the afternoon of June 12 at Swaraj Chowk. The woman was later taken to the hospital by the driver, the police said.

The footage from CCTV cameras on the road shows the woman crossing the road when the speeding car came from the left and hit her. The woman flew into the air and landed on the edge of the road. Passers-by were seen flocking to help her.

The woman has been identified at Rekha Joram Chaudhury, who is 40 years old, said Shivaji Pawar, a senior officer of the local police. "After the accident, the injured woman was treated at a private hospital by the driver. She has sustained a minor fracture and is now stable," said Shivaji Pawar, a senior officer of the local police.  

The process of filing a case against the driver is on at the MIDC Bhosari Police Station. The driver, a 24-year-old,  was not drunk. It is not known why he failed to stop or slow down at the crossing and it is being checked if the car had suffered some kind of mechanical failure, Mr Pawar added.

Two days ago, after a similar incident took place in Hinjewadi area, and a case was registered against the driver.

The accident comes weeks after the horrific Porsche accident, where two young techies were mowed down by a drunk teen driving at 250 kmph. The father and grandfather of the minor have been arrested. The boy, just four months shy of 18, have also been sent to a remand home after massive pubic outrage over the Juvenile Justice Board's decision to release him with the lightest of penalties.

The teen had got initially bail within 15 hours and asked to work with the traffic police of Yerawada for 15 days, and to undergo counselling.
